Wheat futures wobble on Black Sea headlines
The screens moved more than the fundamentals. Basis, protein spreads and blending are where the real money is this harvest.

Chicago and Paris wheat futures spent the week whipsawing on Black Sea headlines, ending marginally lower after a session-by-session tour of every emotion available to a grain trader.
The fundamental picture has not moved as much as the screens suggest: northern-hemisphere harvest is arriving roughly on forecast, Russian export pace is strong, and the market's real question — how much of the new crop the world's biggest exporter will move, and at what floor price — remains unanswered.
The lesson for growers is about basis as much as futures. Local premiums in several regions have detached from the screen, with domestic millers paying up for quality while feed wheat tracks the futures down. Growers holding milling-grade parcels are being urged not to price them off feed-grade headlines.
Agronomically, protein is the story of this harvest: variable spring nitrogen uptake has produced a wide protein spread, and the discounts for missing spec are among the harshest in years. Where blending is an option, it is paying.
Forward, the market is watching three things: Russian export policy, La Niña's effect on the coming southern-hemisphere plant, and whether Chinese buying — quiet for months — returns to the market at these levels.
