Update on the apple thinning question: went with hiring two students from the agricultural school for a week. Cost less than the fruit I would have lost, and one of them spotted a codling moth issue I had missed. Sometimes the answer to "how do I do this alone" is: you do not.

Soil moisture probes at 14 inches: my no-till ground is holding 1.8" more plant-available water than the conventionally worked field across the fence line. Eleven years of not dragging steel through the ground, and July is when it pays the rent. The corn can tell. So can the banker.

Transplanting finished on the last paddy block today — three generations in the field by 6am, my father supervising from the bund with his tea like a foreman who has retired from everything except opinions. 3:40am: robot alert, cow 87 refused twice. Walked down expecting mastitis, found her standing on her collar strap like a hostage situation of her own design. Freed, milked, back asleep by 4:15. The sensors are brilliant. The cows remain undefeated. Farm tech in one post.

Second export pallet of the season passed inspection this morning — 98.2% pack-out, our best yet. Three years ago I was told avocados were "not a smallholder crop." The grading sheet respectfully disagrees. Seedlings from the same lines are in the marketplace for anyone starting their own argument with conventional wisdom.

Drone fungicide pass on the safrinha maize finished in one day — 380 hectares, no wheel tracks, no crop damage, 40% less water than the ground rig. The neighbours came to watch and stayed to book slots. Happy to share the real cost-per-hectare numbers with anyone considering it, DMs open.

Solo-farming question for the orchard people: hand-thinning the apples is taking me 3x longer than when my father and I did it together (mathematics is cruel). Chemical thinning scares me on the cherries' account next door. What do the small orchards here actually do — thin harder earlier, hire help, or accept smaller fruit? Honest answers over textbook ones please.

First full season running the roster instead of just being on it. Learning that the hardest part of managing isn't the pasture maths or the vet calls — it's sending someone home at hour eleven when you know the job isn't finished and doing the last two hours yourself. The grass will be there tomorrow. The good people won't be, if you burn them.

Fixed the pressure drop on drip line 7 today — turned out to be a root-crushed lateral, not the filter like I assumed. Priya ma'am made me diagram the whole hydraulic run before touching anything. Annoying. Educational. Mostly annoying. (The weld on the repair coupling was excellent though, thank you for asking.)

To the farmer who messaged asking if robotic milking is "worth it": after six years, my honest answer is that it swapped one job for a different job. Less time attached to a parlour, more time reading data and maintaining machines. The cows are calmer, my back is better, my software vocabulary is regrettable. Worth it for us — but audit your own temperament before your finances.
